Harry Potter enthusiasts have much to look forward to. As reported by Variety, HBO Original has unveiled the first cast members bringing JK Rowling’s iconic Hogwarts characters to life in a new web series.
John Lithgow, known for his roles in “The Crown” and “Conclave,” will portray Albus Dumbledore, the gentle and wise headmaster of Hogwarts. Meanwhile, Academy Award nominee Janet McTor, recognized for “Tumbleweed” and “The White Queen,” has been cast as Professor Minerva McGonagall.
Paapa Essiedu has been selected for the role of Professor Severus Snape, while Rubeus Hagrid will be played by another actor yet to be confirmed.
The casting announcement also mentioned several Hogwarts staff members. Luke Taron, notable for his performances in “The Patriots” and “Leopoldstadt,” will take on the role of Professor Quirinus Quirrell, and British actor and comedian Paul Whitehouse, also from “Leopoldstadt,” will play Argus Filch, the castle’s caretaker.
Mark Mylod is set to direct several episodes, and both Mark Mylod and Francesca Gardiner expressed their enthusiasm about the cast.
HBO has not yet revealed the actors for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. The casting process over the past year attracted over 30,000 applicants, with production slated to begin this summer.
A press release from Warner Bros. reiterated their support for the series, expressing pride in sharing the story of Harry Potter, which they consider a profound tale of friendship, bravery, and acceptance. The company also mentioned that, despite ongoing discussions about her views, JK Rowling’s involvement in the project’s development has been beneficial.
