HBO is close to finalizing its cast for the eagerly awaited adaptation of the Harry Potter series, with Paapa Essiedu being considered for the role of Severus Snape. The network is also in discussions with Emmy-nominated actress Janet McTeer for the part of Professor Minerva McGonagall. Both actors will join John Lithgow, who has already been confirmed as Professor Albus Dumbledore, as reported by Deadline.
Essiedu is reportedly nearing a deal to portray the famous Professor Snape, who will be depicted as 31 years old in this series, which aligns with the age of the character in the original books. This creative choice aims to illustrate Snape’s transformation from an antagonist to a hero. The role of Snape was previously played by the late Alan Rickman, who was known as the potion master at Hogwarts and eventually became the headmaster.
This new project will mark Essiedu’s return to HBO, having previously appeared in the BBC/HBO limited series “I May Destroy You.”
The Harry Potter television series is set to be filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, the same location as the original films, and is expected to premiere on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027. In an exciting development, over 32,000 young actors have submitted audition tapes for the key roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
