Pierce Brosnan recently shared that he would have accepted an offer to play a famous character in the Harry Potter series if given the chance. The Harry Potter films are well-known for their cast, particularly Daniel Radcliffe’s iconic role. Currently, a television remake of J.K. Rowling’s beloved series is in the works, and it involves recasting major characters. Among those taking on these roles are Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore.
In a conversation with the Telegraph regarding his new TV show, Mobland, Brosnan expressed his desire to portray Dumbledore, a role initially played by Richard Harris, who was Brosnan’s adopted uncle. Brosnan humorously noted that as his hair turned gray, he felt he was entering “his Dumbledore years,” joking that he might consider accepting the role if asked. He remarked:
“I’ve always looked to Dumbledore as my hair turned gray and the maturity of life rests on my face and shoulders. That’s a joke within my family; I’m heading into my Dumbledore year. I don’t want to go there… especially right now, but if I was asked (to play the role), I would probably say yes.”
Brosnan’s career includes roles in significant franchises, such as his portrayal of James Bond in multiple films, so his interest in playing Dumbledore isn’t surprising. He has also appeared in the spy film Black Bag and the HBO movie Great Trillian Hall.
Regrettably, the prospect of Brosnan playing Dumbledore was dashed when John Lithgow was announced for the role in the Harry Potter TV series. If Brosnan had been cast, he might have approached the character in a way that distinguished him from Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, potentially lending his interpretation a unique flair.
Although Brosnan will not take on the role of Dumbledore, the idea of his interpretation presents an intriguing angle for such a pivotal character in the Harry Potter universe. Lithgow is likely to deliver a strong performance as Dumbledore, but Brosnan’s interest would have brought an interesting dynamic to the character, leaving fans to ponder what could have been.
