A few days after Harry Potter fans expressed their frustration over the casting of an American actor as Dumbledore, they were again discontented with another casting choice for the upcoming HBO series—this time for Severus Snape.

This new Harry Potter TV adaptation aims to delve deeper into the magical universe and could potentially run for "10 consecutive years," though some fans are not pleased with the rumored casting decisions.

Reports suggest that British actor Paapa Essiedu, 34, has been "offered the role of Severus Snape" for the reboot, according to Hollywood Reporter. However, it remains uncertain whether serious negotiations have commenced.

The late Alan Rickman famously portrayed Professor Snape throughout Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter film series from 2001 to 2011, and many fans took to social media to express their opinions upon hearing about Essiedu’s casting possibility. One commenter lamented, "There’s only one actor fit to play Professor Snape. HBO’s move is a shame, as it risks ruining a beloved character."

Some comments expressed skepticism about Essiedu’s suitability for the role, arguing that the character’s specific traits as described in the books don’t align with his appearance. One fan remarked, "Paapa Essiedu doesn’t match the physical description of Snape."

While some defended Essiedu, acknowledging his talent, others confirmed that his portrayal could never replace Rickman’s beloved performance. One fan stated, "I love Paapa Essiedu; I saw his performance at the National Theatre, and he was fantastic!"

Essiedu is known for his roles in The Lazarus Project and Gangs of London.

Additionally, John Lithgow has been confirmed as Dumbledore in the new series, which is already facing backlash from fans for casting an American actor in a traditionally British role. Critics of this decision voiced their concerns about maintaining the British essence of the franchise.

Meanwhile, HBO has reportedly locked in two more key cast members, with Emmy-nominated actress Janet McTeer in talks for Professor McGonagall. Essiedu is expected to join the cast shortly. When asked for comments, HBO declined, stating that details will only be confirmed upon finalizing the deals.
