As production of the HBO adaptation of Harry Potter progresses, more information about the cast and crew is starting to emerge. John Lithgow has garnered attention with his confirmed role as Albus Dumbledore, and now there are additional rumors regarding who may be portraying Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape.

There have been speculations about Paapa Essiedu stepping into the role of Severus Snape, especially since he paid tribute to Alan Rickman, the original actor who portrayed the character. Reports suggest that HBO is in talks with two more significant cast members for the much-anticipated adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books. While this news seems more promising than previous rumors from December 8, HBO has cautioned against assuming anything until official confirmations are made.

An HBO representative stated, “We understand that a series of this magnitude invites numerous rumors and speculation. As we proceed through pre-production, we will only verify details once they are finalized.”

Similar to Alan Rickman, Paapa Essiedu has a background in Shakespearean theater and received an Emmy nomination for his role in “I May Destroy You” and was a BAFTA Awards nominee in 2024 for “The Lazarus Project.” At 34 years old, he aligns with Francesca Gardiner’s assertion that the series maintains a ‘standard’ age for the characters. The HBO adaptation aims to create a more inclusive and racially diverse world within the Harry Potter franchise, with opinions mixed on the casting of Snape.

On the other hand, the casting of Minerva McGonagall is also under discussion. The actress, notably younger than the late Maggie Smith, who previously played the character in the film series, is recognized for her roles in projects like “The Crown.” She received an Emmy nomination and has been an Oscar contender for “Albert Nobbs,” winning acclaim for her performances in various award-winning productions.

While the excitement grows, fans are encouraged to stay patient for an official announcement from HBO. The series is anticipated to premiere sometime in 2026 or 2027.
