It’s been nearly a decade since the last Harry Potter film hit theaters, but the story of Harry Potter is not finished yet, with TV adaptations in the works.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced a show that will adapt the complete book series (1-7) back in April 2023, subsequently moving the project to HBO Max. Recent updates from HBO executives at a presentation in London on December 5th confirmed some details about the show, although there were rumors regarding potential cast members.

A mix of actors and comedians, including John Lithgow, Janet McTier, and Paapa Esiedu, are set to join the cast. Long-time fans are certainly eager for the return to the wizarding world.

J.K. Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, is involved as a producer. The new adaptation will be available on HBO Max in the US, with further details regarding its UK airing expected to follow the lead of other HBO series like House of the Dragon, likely airing on Sky Atlantic.

Rowling’s past comments on gender issues have sparked controversy, which is often brought up in discussions about the new project. HBO CEO Casey Bloys emphasized that the series will focus on the positive themes of Harry Potter, such as love and self-acceptance.

Francesca Gardiner, a writer known for her work on the series “Succession,” was announced as the showrunner in June 2024.

There’s speculation about casting, with actors like Nick Frost potentially taking on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, a character previously portrayed by the late Robbie Coltrane. Rumors also suggest that Mark Rylance might be cast as Professor Dumbledore, with Paapa Essiedou in discussions to play Severus Snape and Cillian Murphy considered for Voldemort. However, there are no confirmations on who will portray the young Harry Potter yet, though John Lithgow may be nearing a deal for the role of Dumbledore. HBO has not officially confirmed any casting details, noting that they expect rumors to circulate as the series progresses through pre-production.

Filming is anticipated to start in mid-2025 at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios, the same location used for the original films. The series is projected for a release in 2026 and will span ten seasons, rather than the seven corresponding to the books—details on the structure of those seasons are yet to be released.
