Stephen Fry is reportedly appealing for the lead role in the new Harry Potter series. With the HBO adaptation of the beloved Wizarding World set to start this summer, there are many rumors circulating about potential actors stepping into the roles of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and other cherished characters.

While HBO has yet to confirm the cast, there are indications that American actor John Lithgow is nearing an agreement to portray Albus Dumbledore. Additionally, speculation surrounds Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy potentially joining the cast, and Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort, mentioned he would be interested in reprising his role.

Current rumors suggest that the series will span seven seasons, featuring Stephen Fry, who is already associated with the franchise from his work narrating the Harry Potter audiobooks. Fans have been advocating for Fry to take on a prominent role since the announcement of the series, with some even discussing it on Reddit.

Fry mentioned in a conversation with Metro that, to his knowledge, he hasn’t yet been approached for a role, but he playfully acknowledged his age could be a factor in casting decisions.

He humorously commented on the casting speculations, particularly regarding Lithgow as Dumbledore, joking about Lithgow’s suitability for the character’s signature glasses. Whether Fry plays the role of the Fat Lady or Dumbledore, there’s a strong belief that he’ll shine in the new series.

The Harry Potter series is expected to premiere on HBO Max in 2026.
