In the Harry Potter movies, Dobby became a divisive character. With the upcoming HBO Harry Potter reboot set to start filming this summer, it won’t be long before we find out which actor will voice the beloved sock-obsessed house elf. Let’s revisit the origins from the Harry Potter trailer and the Philosopher’s Stone! Dobby was primarily voiced by Toby Jones throughout the films, giving him a memorable tone. Fans recently voiced their opinions on the R/Harrypotteronhbo subreddit, with one user expressing, “I hope they don’t replicate Dobby’s voice from the movie.” Another added, “Dobby’s voice was really good in the film, but with more screen time in the show, I’m curious about how they’ll approach it. I never pictured Dobby’s voice like that in my head.” Dobby, first introduced in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and having a poignant ending in “Deathly Hallows Part 1,” is integral to the story, making the choice of actor for this character quite challenging. Nonetheless, a suggestion from a Reddit user, Spectre-AD6049, noted, “As long as Andy Serkis plays Dobby, I don’t mind how he sounds.” Serkis, known for his role as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings series, is no stranger to portraying unique creatures, making him an excellent fit for Dobby. Another user agreed, stating, “I recently watched the Lord of the Rings, and Andy Serkis is amazing; he deserves an Oscar.” Currently, no actors have been confirmed for the HBO reboot, despite rumors regarding John Lithgow being cast as Dumbledore. We look forward to an official casting announcement in the coming months as we approach the show’s release in 2026.
