The magical realm needs to be welcoming and inclusive. Fans of the Harry Potter series have recognized this theme in the books and films for a long time. McGonagall encapsulates it nicely by stating, “Dumbledore would have been happier than anyone to think there’s a little more love in the world.” While the truth of that statement may be debatable, it’s encouraging to see that Universal Orlando Resort is addressing this issue by expanding its magical world to be more inclusive for everyone.
### How will the changes be implemented?
As noted by Alessia Dunn from Inside the Magic, “Theme parks are designed for excitement and enjoyment… As the industry progresses technically, concerns about inclusivity and accessibility are increasingly relevant.” It’s easy to overlook experiences that don’t align with our own, but for guests with different body sizes, mobility needs, or physical conditions, not all attractions are made with their comfort in mind. I resonate with those who view this as a barrier that should be resolved. Dan mentions, “In Walt Disney World, they removed the seat divider from Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure to better accommodate larger guests and provided test sheets for Tron/Light Cycle/Run, allowing riders to ensure they fit comfortably.”
Dan further continues, “In Harry Potter’s Universal theme park… The vehicles for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure often have limited seating and size restrictions.” Many guests find it disheartening after waiting in line, only to discover they don’t meet the size requirements.
I am excited about the upcoming “Battle Between Harry Potter and the Ministry” attraction, set to open on May 22, 2025. This thrilling theme park will feature rides designed to be more accessible, including what is described as the most accommodating Harry Potter ride ever. Reportedly, the seating is “engineered with enhanced flexibility” and has “lap seat belts to ensure guest comfort, with a minimum requirement of 40 inches.”
Theme Park Express, a social media account, remarked that it’s “the kindest Potter ride ever,” highlighting that the seat belts can extend across two seats for added context, making it more welcoming for larger guests.
Although I won’t share every detail, it’s safe to say that “this ride promises an extraordinary experience, both visually and narratively.”
