Janet McGorge has been cast as Professor Mibeba McGonagall in HBO’s eagerly awaited new television series based on the Harry Potter books, set to premiere next year. McGorge takes over the role, previously portrayed by the late Maggie Smith in the film adaptations, who passed away in September at the age of 89.

This highly anticipated series features a star-studded cast, including nominated talent like McGorge and Papa Esiedu, who will play Professor Severus Snape, a character brought to life by Alan Rickman in the films. Esiedu, 34, is one of the first actors confirmed for the show, alongside John Lithgow, who will portray Professor Albus Dumbledore.

HBO commented on the speculation surrounding the series, stating, “We appreciate that a series of this profile will generate considerable rumors and speculation,” adding that they will only verify casting details once negotiations are finalized.

Fans have expressed mixed feelings about the casting choices, with some questioning the decision to cast American actor Lithgow as Dumbledore, a character typically associated with British heritage, as noted in various reactions across social media.
