In April 2023, Warner Bros Discovery announced a reboot series of Harry Potter, and progress has been swift since then. The cast is expected to be revealed soon, with filming set to start this summer.
While JK Rowling’s film adaptation of her seven-book series was immensely successful, many characters, scenes, and intricate details from the text were left out of the films. Fans are eagerly anticipating updates on the cast and release dates, as Warner Bros Discovery has promised a more “faithful” representation of the novels. In a recent interview intended to promote his latest project, White Lotus Season 3, Jason Isaacs mentioned having heard about some of the actors already chosen for the upcoming Harry Potter reboot.
Isaacs, who portrayed Lucius Malfoy in multiple films starting with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002, noted he has no advice for the new cast. He commented, “Yes, I know who they’re casting, and they’re incredible actors.” His co-star Patrick Schwarzenegger expressed surprise at this. Isaac also shared enthusiasm for showrunner Mark Mylod, highlighting his track record, including work on Game of Thrones and Entourage, stating, “He’s an incredibly talented guy, and they don’t need advice from me.” Mylod will direct and create several episodes of the reboot, while Francesca Gardiner is co-writing and serving as a showrunner.
Rumored Actors for the Harry Potter Reboot
So far, Warner Bros Discovery has not confirmed any cast members for the upcoming Harry Potter series. The only casting news so far is the open call that ran from September to October 31st, attracting over 30,000 children who submitted audition tapes. From these auditions, the team hopes to cast actors for the leads: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, along with other student roles.
There have been rumors circulating about older actors being cast in significant roles. Recently, acclaimed actor Cillian Murphy was speculated to play Professor Quirrell, although he is often fancast as Voldemort. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is rumored to be in the running for Petunia Dursley, while Oscar-winner Mark Rylance may portray Albus Dumbledore alongside Mark Strong also being considered for the same role. Paul Essiedu is mentioned in connection to Professor Severus Snape, and Rachel Weisz and Sharon Horgan have been linked with the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall. Filming for the first season is set to commence this summer, with the series expected to premiere on HBO and Max in 2026.
