Nick Frost is set to portray one of the most cherished characters in the beloved Saga as HBO finalizes the main cast for the forthcoming Harry Potter series.
According to Deadline, the Shaun of the Dead star is nearing a deal to take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant groundskeeper of Hogwarts, a character previously played by the late Robbie Coltrane in the eight Harry Potter films.
Frost has been involved in various projects, including collaborations with Simon Pegg, as well as films like Attack the Block, Fighting with My Family, and Run Fat Boy Run. Recently, he lent his voice to the droid SM-33 in Disney+’s Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew.
There were earlier rumors that Brett Goldstein, known for his roles in Ted Lasso and Thor: Love and Thunder, would be cast as Hagrid.
Currently, the confirmed cast members include John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu, who will portray Professor Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, and Severus Snape, respectively.
HBO has been tight-lipped about casting details, issuing a standard statement regarding the many rumors surrounding the series: “We understand that a high-profile series generates a lot of speculation. We’ll announce when contracts are finalized.”
The studio is actively seeking newcomers to fill the lead roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, with indications that those cast announcements are imminent.
Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials, Killing Eve) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Mark Mirodo (Succession, Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) will be an executive producer and director for several episodes.
The official logline for the show proclaims: “This series will serve as a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter book series. It features a new cast that aims to inspire a new generation of fans while staying true to the rich characters that have captivated Harry Potter enthusiasts for over 25 years.”
“Each season will introduce Harry Potter and these remarkable adventures to audiences worldwide, yet the original films will remain central to the franchise and will be accessible globally.”
Warner Bros. TV head Channing Dungey stated earlier this year that the series will “provide more depth than what can be conveyed in a two-hour movie…that’s the purpose of this journey.”
An official premiere date for the series has yet to be announced, but it is expected to debut sometime in 2026.
