According to reports, HBO has approached Janet McTeer to play Professor Minerva McGonagall in the forthcoming Harry Potter series. The Oscar-nominated actress is in negotiations for a role she previously portrayed in the Warner Bros. films, as stated by Deadline. At 63, McTeer has appeared in projects like Kaos, Ozark, and TumbleWeeds.
This information was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by industry insider Mytimetoshinehello, who posted about “Janet McTeer,” indicating that she has been offered the role of Professor McGonagall.
In addition, Paapa Essiedu seems to be close to securing a deal to play Professor Severus Snape. Deadline noted that the 34-year-old, known for works like The Lazarus Project and I May Destroy You, is taking on the role originally made famous by Alan Rickman, who was 54 at the time he portrayed Snape.
John Lithgow has been confirmed as the only cast member so far, stepping into the role of Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow discussed his casting with Screenland; however, HBO has not officially confirmed any other castings, stating: “As we progress through pre-production, we will only confirm details once agreements are finalized.”
The Harry Potter television series is being developed by writer/showrunner Francesca Gardiner and directed by executive producer Mark Myro. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and MAX content, describes the project as a “faithful adaptation” of the original books.
