Step aside, John Lithgow – Pierce Brosnan still envisions himself as Harry Potter’s wisest wizard. Reports suggest that Lithgow has signed on to portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, but Brosnan isn’t quite ready to relinquish his wand. In an interview with The Telegraph while discussing Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming show Mobland, Brosnan revealed that, although he has turned down the opportunity to reprise his role as James Bond, he has always dreamed of taking on the part of Dumbledore at Hogwarts.
“I’ve always considered Dumbledore, especially as my hair turns gray and experience settles on my face and shoulders, and it’s become a joke in my family – I’m not up for Dumbledore’s era.”
For Brosnan, the concept is not just amusing; it carries a sweet and sentimental significance. His late first wife, Cassandra Harris, was the niece of Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, creating a personal connection to the character. While HBO seems set to proceed with Lithgow in a decade-long adaptation of the beloved series, it’s comforting to know there’s a strong alternative for the role of Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.

Lithgow shared his thoughts on the Smartres Podcast earlier this week, elaborating on what audiences can expect from the series. He mentioned that he aims to embody the characters played by both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the film series, although he does not find it daunting to face the character’s sporadic appearances in the books. A few weeks ago, in an interview with ScreenRant, Lithgow expressed his excitement.
“It was completely unexpected for me. I was attending another film event at the Sundance Film Festival, and it wasn’t easy to come to terms with this being the final chapter of my career. But I’m very excited.”
