According to Deadline, Nick Frost is nearing a deal to play Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter series. The British actor and comedian is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations for the iconic character. This news comes after fans speculated about his involvement following a cryptic Instagram post he made on March 20, stating, “It’s happening. It’s happening.”
HBO has not yet confirmed the casting. “We appreciate that a prominent series like this will generate rumors and speculation. As we move forward in pre-production, we will share specifics as we finalize the deal,” the network stated.
Frost is among several actors linked to the project. John Lithgow is set to portray Professor Albus Dumbledore, while discussions are underway with Janet McTier and Paapa Esiedu for the roles of Professor Minerva McGonagall and Professor Severus Snape, respectively.
Fans began connecting the dots regarding Frost’s casting after noticing he followed many cast members on social media. His comedic and dramatic experience in shows like “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “Badlands” makes him a fitting choice for the role.
Hagrid plays a crucial role in the Harry Potter series, serving as the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts and later as a professor of magical creatures. He is also the first character in the magical world that Harry encounters in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Robbie Coltrane, who portrayed Hagrid in all eight films, became a fan favorite before his passing in 2022, leaving big shoes to fill for any new adaptations.
The Harry Potter TV series intends to span a decade, providing in-depth coverage of each of J.K. Rowling’s books. Francesca Gardiner is leading the project as writer and showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing and serving as an executive producer.
