As an adult Harry Potter enthusiast, it might come as a surprise that I’ve only read classic YA literature written by authors who are long gone. Since reigniting my passion for fiction in 2018, my reading list has included titles like “Anne of Green Gables,” “The Secret Garden,” “Willow’s Wind,” “The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland,” “Swallow,” and the first four volumes of an Amazon series. However, I have not explored any contemporary children’s or YA literature—there’s been no exposure to “Twilight” or “The Hunger Games.”
Recently, three factors prompted me to reassess my reading habits. First, as a children’s writer, I came across some praising comments about Katherine Rundell’s book “Super-Infinite: The Transformations of John Donne,” which features prominent authors like JK Rowling. Additionally, there’s a lot of buzz around the latest “Hunger Games” installment, but I can’t read the discussions without risking spoilers. Lastly, some introspection led me to realize that I may be missing out on valuable experiences that others cherish.
In the spirit of embracing new adventures, I’ve decided to let Katniss Everdeen guide me into her series. More on this tomorrow!
